Windmills of Pico - The Azores

pedestal - reconstruction

This mill has very definitely been reconstructed (in the period 2002 - 2004) with an eye to looking superficially like a mill, but requiring minimum maintenance. From a distance the mill looks like a regular wooden body as found throughout the islands, but close up you can see that the "body" of the mill is in fact constructed with a cement render on the outside - it's merely a tower made to look like a rotatable body. Thus the interior shows varnished flat wooden panelling (to hide the masonry walls), with no hint of the expected timbered framework. The millstones and gearing looks as if it might have been designed to rotate - but the gap around the windshaft is filled with filler, so that even if the wind was from the right direction (since the tower cannot be turned to face the wind) the windshaft is prevented from turning.

Moinho do Monte: pedestal - metal clad body

The metal covering of this mill has provided it with a fair degree of protection over the years, though a number of items have begun to fall from the mill. The remains of the windshaft and sails are now on the ground around the mill, and the stone windshaft bearing is also to be seen there.

This is another mill that is incorrectly identified on the 2005 inventory survey maps - the mill is shown as being the black circular symbol to the east of the road, whereas it is actually the orange symbol to the west (left) of the same road - helpfully labelled Moinho do Monte!

Looks like another restoration that was more of a total reconstruction - there is a pile of discarded (original?) wood fragments alongside the mill.

pedestal - Just pedestal

I believe this mill is wrongly identified on the map that is included in the Azores inventory. That map points to a symbol found to the south west of the crossroads, but the remains are actually the rather fainter symbol to the north east of the same crossroads. In any event, the remains in the 2005 survey show a mill with a derelict mill body, but now there is nothing left but the pedestal.

Moinho do Frade: pedestal - restored

This mill is surrounded by the Unesco World Heritage vineyard landscape that provides the mill with a unique setting. As a huge tourist draw the vineyard and the mill complement each other, and this obviously provided the impetus to procure the money to fully restore the mill in 2003/4. In the restoration (or perhaps reconstruction would be a better overall word) the mill has gained a more substantial (roofed) balcony and rear steps than it had at least in the near past. The mill is in working order, driven by its 4 bladed propeller.

pedestal - Pedestal, and a pile of wood fragments.

The 1998 survey picture shows this as a complete mill, with sails, obviously carefully restored and maintained as a tourist draw for the port and town of Madalena. However by 2005 the mill is pictured without its sails, but in otherwise seemingly good condition (though a coat of paint wouldn't have gone amiss). I'm not sure what happened in this period, but I gather the mill ownership changed hands, from being under the auspices of the tourist board, to being owned by the Madalena Town council. Whether as a direct result of these changes or not, the result has been tragic. As of late 2012, the mill now comprises the solid pedestal, and literally a pile of wood fragments looking remarkably like a pile of firewood. The pile is certainly not large enough to account for the entire wooden part of the mill, and I was unable to gather any more information about what may have become of it. Those parts that remain in the pile have obviously been deliberately sawn up - for example the rear access ladder is there, quite clearly sawn in half.

I've categorized this as a mock mill, but it may well simply be a replica - either way it does not appear in the 2005 survey and is clearly newly built. Its appearance is very similar to the mill at Criação Velha; almost as if when they reconstructed that mill they used the plans to produce this one as well (they both have a 4 blade propeller design). Tell-tale signs that this is just for show rather than being historic include the very regular blocks used to construct the pedestal (rather than the irregular naturally sized blocks used historically), and the fact that there is no provision for the mill to turn to face the wind. I was unable to gain access to see if there is any internal machinery. (There is however an interesting animal driven mill in the adjacent information centre).
