THIS BRICK TOWER IS THE SHELL OF AN 18TH CENTURY WINDMILL BUILT INTO THE 14TH CENTURY GATEHOUSE OF THE ABBEY OF ST BENET AT HOLM FOUNDED BEFORE THE NORMAN CONQEST AND ONCE ONE OF THE RICHEST ABBEYS IN ENGLAND. ON THE HIGHER GROUND BEYOND ARE THE REMAINS OF THE GREAT CHURCH. TRACES OF OTHER BUILDINGS AND EXTENSIVE FISHPONDS CAN ALSO BE SEEN. THE WHOLE PRECINCT OF ABOUT 38 ACRES WAS SURROUNDED BY A DEFENSIVE WALL OF WHICH A SMALL PART STILL STANDS AT ITS FULL HEIGHT.
