The bicentenary of
Upminster windmill was celebrated on 13th July with
a very well attended community celebration in glorious sunshine.
As well as the prime attraction of the mill, whose sails were turning
having very recently been freed, there were actors presenting a
pageant relating to the mill 200 years ago; a horse drawn waggon giving
rides; a blacksmith; weavers; art exhibit; and all manner of other stalls
and displays.
There were huge queues to visit the windmill itself, which has recently
achieved charitable status. Freeing the sails is just a first step to
full restoration to working order - currently the cap is unable to turn
so the sails cannot be brought to wind.
