Windmill Hill:
tower
- rebuilt, moved from Chiseldon
Signboard
says:
Chisledon Windmill
This brick tower the sole remains of the Chisledon Mill was presented by the Borough of Thamesdown and the Parish of Chisledon
to the St Martin's Property Group for use as a central symbol at the Windmill Hill busincess centre.
The windmill is believed to have been built in 1823 and was still functioning as a corn mill until 1894.
Some time after this date the cap, sails and other working were removed when the tower was converted to a water storage tank.
The present cap, fan stage, sails and other details were extensively researched to reproduce as accurately as possible
the originally designed mill, and the relocation and reconstruction works were carried out between October 1983 and August 1984.
A mediaeval post mill was once located at Windmill Hill and this traditional business activity is the rationale behind
the name of the centre and the relocation of the Chisledon windmill.
The tower was dismantled and relocated by Lovell Special Worlk Limite, Devices, Wiltshire.
Research, management, millwrighting and completion by Millwrights International Limited, Mapledurham, Oxon.
for the St Martin's Property Group, London.
