Map/aerial photo of the area around the mill
Smock mill function:Corn mill
- Although much of the mill was "relocated" to Gatwick Manor in the 1960, the original smock base still survives
This mill is in the strange situation of being found at 3 different places:
- The remaining base, in situ in Partridge Green
- At least in spirit, in a reconstruction at Gatwick Manor, which was intended to house the relocated machinery
- The remaining machinery that did not rot away whilst abandoned at Gatwick Manor was recovered and since 2004 is on display at Lowfield Heath windmill
The
items to be found at Lowfield Heath mill comprise
- the cap curb ring made up of eight rack segments
- the iron windshaft and worm gear
- the iron wallower, with a fragment of the wooden upright shaft, complete with cross tailed gudgeon bearing
- a French Burr stone which has been reassembled and banded
- various stone spindles and other parts metal parts
