Much of the mechanism of the Fabyan windmill has been shipped to the
Netherlands for restoration, so back in the USA work is
now starting on the exterior structure. Work is being done by the
Walter Daniels Construction Co, but overseen by Dutch millwright
Lucas Verbij, who has been closely involved in the project to restore
the mill since 1998.
The mill is 68ft high, and around 140 years old. It was moved in 1914
from DuPage County, to Col. George Fabyan's Fox River estate, when the
Colonel bought it. It ground grain, and via a bakery in the basement
produced bread which was fed to prize livestock and captive bears, Tom
and Jerry, living on the estate.
