William Lucas, a Quaker brewer in Hitchin, wrote about events, both local, national, and international, in his diary and reminiscences covering the 1830s-1860s. His coverage for 1839 noted that the high price of bread was causing unrest, and also that his father's windmill had been damaged yet again by high winds.
