Saxtead Green post mill trestle unsafe 🌍

Via a Facebook post on Windmill Hoppers, millwright Tim Whiting informs us that Saxtead Green post mill trestle has become very unsafe, and that quick works have taken place to secure the mill. To reduce the weight on the buck, the sails have been removed, and the buck is held up by guy lines.

The dramatic events started with the discovery of a loose chunk of oak on the floor, which lead to finding that one quarterbar had burst its mortice. Within a week a second quarterbar did the same, and soon there was a massive crack in the main post - described by Tim as making the trestle essentially "a snapped carrot". Planning is taking place to lift the buck off of the post.
