With news that there is more restoration work planned for Halnaker windmill, I thought it useful to document the last round of restoration in 2017,
as covered by
Sussex World published on 9/10/17.
It noted then that:
- work had been completed to replace the tiled exterior and repair the white cap and balconies
- refitting sails (sweeps) and the door were supposedly held off till Spring [Note: the sweeps were not placed back on the mill]
- the mill had been fenced off since May 2013 after vandals brought down an internal beam,
and investigations at the time uncovered other defects including loose tiles, and a failing "spar" [not sure exactly what is meany by this term]
When subsequently linking back to that news report, Sussex World adds the additional information that the refurbishment was done by Fowlers,
and cost £137,000.
