WATERTON.
FAREWELL GATHERING.
A most enjoyable evening was spent at Mr Protheroe's, at Waterton mill, last Thursday. As he was leaving the district he invited a number of young friends to a farewell gathering. About fifty were present altogether. The mill was tastefully decorated and fitted up for the occasion by Mr Protheroe's family. A number of musical selections, at which Miss Protheroe presided at the organ, along with parlor games, kept the young people fully amused during the evening. They all did ample justice to a bountifully spread table, presided over by Miss Protheroe and Mrs Cullen. Before the party broke up Mr James Osborne said a few words regretting the departure of Mr Protheroe and his family from the district, and hoping the change would be beneficial to Mrs Protheroe, who was just recovering from a severe illness. He wished Mr Protheroe every success in the district to which he was going, and expressed the thanks of those present for the agreeable evening they had spent. Mr Fred Timms also spoke to the same effect, and called for three cheers for Mr and Mrs Protheroe and their family, which were given most heartily. Mr Protheroe, in acknowledging the remarks, expressed his sorrow at leaving the district and the many kind friends to whom he had become attached. He thanked Mr Osborne and those present for their expressions of regret at his departure, and the kind remarks they had used towards himself and his family. Mr Robert Gilmour again called for three cheers, which were given with right good will, and shortly afterwards the party broke up, all having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
