From the interpretation boards in the Bycroft watermill in Howick Historical Village, a listing of the flour mills of South Auckland starts with the following:
George and William Trice built a windmill on "Mill Hill" above their farm homestead in Clifton Road Whitford above the Tauranga River. They were the first settlers in Whitford arriving in 1847 and are remembered for their Whitford gold mining and farming activities. The windmill ground wheat. The sails were made of wooden stats and turned with a rudder to face the wind. It was mounted on a large sawn off tree trunk.Private correspondence with Alan La Roche of the Howick Historical Vilage indicated that "The story was collected by Rev. Robert Hattaway who bequeathed his farm and research to the Howick Historical Village." [info]
